Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacteria
For the health condition: Chemotherapy (reducing side effects)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Bifidobacteria has been investigated in scientific studies for its potential to reduce certain side effects associated with chemotherapy, particularly gastrointestinal side effects such as diarrhea and mucositis. Chemotherapy can disrupt the gut microbiota, leading to gastrointestinal complications. Bifidobacteria, as a genus of probiotic bacteria, is known to help restore and maintain a healthy intestinal microbiome. Several clinical trials and animal studies have shown that supplementation with Bifidobacteria (often in combination with other probiotics) may reduce the severity and incidence of chemotherapy-induced diarrhea and mucositis by modulating inflammatory responses, enhancing gut barrier function, and competing with pathogenic bacteria.
For example, a randomized controlled trial (RCT) in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy found that those supplemented with probiotics containing Bifidobacteria had a significantly lower incidence of severe diarrhea compared to placebo. Other studies have indicated a reduction in the duration and severity of oral mucositis. However, many of these studies use multi-strain probiotic formulations, making it difficult to isolate the effects of Bifidobacteria alone. Overall, while evidence is growing and promising, it remains moderate in strength and further large-scale, well-controlled RCTs are needed to fully establish efficacy and determine optimal strains and dosages.
