Tea polyphenols, particularly those found in green and black tea such as catechins and theaflavins, have been studied for their potential cardiovascular benefits. Multiple epidemiological studies suggest that regular tea consumption is associated with a modest reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), including coronary heart disease and stroke. The proposed mechanisms include antioxidant activity, improvement of endothelial function, reduction of blood pressure, inhibition of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation, and anti-inflammatory effects. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that tea polyphenol supplementation can lead to small reductions in blood pressure and LDL cholesterol, as well as improvements in vascular function. However, the magnitude of these effects is generally modest, and results across studies are somewhat inconsistent, likely due to differences in study populations, dosages, and tea types. Meta-analyses of RCTs and cohort studies generally support a beneficial, though not dramatic, effect of tea polyphenols on cardiovascular risk factors. While the evidence base is stronger than for many other botanical ingredients, limitations include short intervention durations and variability in the polyphenol content of tea products. Overall, the scientific evidence supports a moderate role for tea polyphenols in cardiovascular health, particularly as part of a healthy dietary pattern, but not as a primary treatment for established cardiovascular disease.
