Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 3

Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) found in fish oils, have been studied for their cardiovascular benefits, which extend to the health of capillaries and the broader vascular system. Omega-3s exhibit anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic, and vasodilatory properties, all of which can help maintain the integrity and function of capillaries. Research suggests that omega-3s may reduce endothelial dysfunction (the endothelium lines blood vessels, including capillaries) and decrease blood viscosity, thus supporting microvascular circulation. A number of clinical trials and meta-analyses have shown that omega-3 supplementation can improve markers of vascular health, such as reducing blood pressure and decreasing markers of inflammation (e.g., C-reactive protein).

However, most studies focus on cardiovascular disease risk factors and large-vessel outcomes, with less direct evidence specific to capillary structure or function. Still, the mechanisms described in research—improving endothelial function, reducing oxidative stress, and enhancing blood flow—are relevant to capillary health. Therefore, while the use of omega-3s for supporting the capillary system is supported by plausible mechanisms and some indirect evidence, direct clinical evidence is limited, justifying a moderate evidence score.
