Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) are a family of proteins with key roles in angiogenesis, wound healing, and tissue repair. Scientific studies have shown that certain FGFs, particularly basic FGF (FGF-2), stimulate endothelial cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation, which are essential processes in the formation and maintenance of capillaries. Preclinical research, including both in vitro and animal studies, demonstrates that administration of FGFs can enhance new capillary formation (angiogenesis) and improve blood supply in ischemic tissues. Some clinical studies, primarily in the context of therapeutic angiogenesis for cardiovascular diseases and chronic wounds, have reported beneficial effects of FGF application, such as improved healing and increased capillary density. However, the clinical evidence is mixed, with some trials failing to show significant benefits, and concerns remain regarding the potential for unwanted side effects, including excessive or abnormal blood vessel growth and tumorigenesis. At present, the use of FGFs to support capillary health is grounded in a substantial body of mechanistic and preclinical data, but large-scale, definitive clinical trials are lacking. As such, while there is scientific rationale and moderate evidence for their role in supporting the capillary system, widespread clinical application remains limited and further research is warranted.
