Fagopyrum, commonly known as buckwheat, is primarily used to support capillary health due to its high content of the flavonoid rutin. Rutin has been studied for its ability to strengthen capillaries, reduce capillary fragility, and improve vascular health. Historically, extracts of buckwheat have been used in traditional medicine for circulatory disorders, but there is also scientific validation for these uses.
Clinical studies have demonstrated that rutin can decrease capillary permeability and fragility, thereby supporting individuals with conditions such as chronic venous insufficiency and hemorrhoids. For example, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials have shown that rutin supplementation can reduce symptoms like swelling and pain in people with venous disorders. The mechanism is thought to involve antioxidant effects and the inhibition of enzymes that degrade connective tissue in vessel walls.
However, while rutin itself is well studied, there are fewer clinical trials using whole buckwheat or unspecified Fagopyrum extracts. Most evidence comes from research into rutin or isolated buckwheat-derived compounds. Nonetheless, the use of Fagopyrum to support capillary health is justified by both historical use and moderate scientific evidence, mainly due to its rutin content.
