Evidence supporting the use of: Serrapeptase
For the health condition: Bursitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 1
Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme originally isolated from bacteria in the digestive tract of silkworms. It has been used in some countries as a supplement purported to reduce inflammation and pain. The rationale for its use in bursitis is based on its proposed anti-inflammatory and fibrinolytic activities, which theoretically could help reduce swelling and pain associated with the condition. However, scientific evidence supporting its use for bursitis specifically is extremely limited. The majority of available research on serrapeptase consists of small, older clinical trials or animal studies examining its effects on general inflammation, pain, or postoperative swelling, rather than bursitis directly. Few, if any, high-quality randomized controlled trials have specifically evaluated serrapeptase for bursitis. Reviews of the literature generally conclude that while serrapeptase may have some anti-inflammatory effects, the quality of evidence is low and more robust clinical research is needed. Therefore, its use for bursitis is weakly justified by scientific evidence and is not considered standard or well-supported by the medical community.
