Evidence supporting the use of: Japanese Kadsura
For the health condition: Bruises (prevention)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Japanese Kadsura (Kadsura japonica) has a history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly within Chinese herbal practices. It is often included in formulations intended to support blood circulation and treat trauma-related conditions, such as bruises and contusions. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Kadsura species are thought to "invigorate the blood" and "dispel stasis," which are believed to help with the resolution of bruising and subcutaneous bleeding. However, direct scientific studies validating the efficacy of Japanese Kadsura specifically for bruise prevention or treatment are scarce. Most available research focuses on related species (such as Kadsura heteroclita or Kadsura coccinea) or on isolated compounds with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically support tissue repair. Nevertheless, robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies confirming these effects in the context of bruise prevention do not currently exist for Kadsura japonica. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition, the scientific evidence remains limited, and its effectiveness for this specific indication should be viewed with caution.
