Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Cynanchum species, such as Cynanchum atratum and Cynanchum paniculatum, have a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, these plants are believed to "dispel wind and dampness," "reduce swelling," and "relieve pain." Specifically, they have been included in topical preparations and internal formulas for the treatment of bruises, sprains, and other traumatic injuries. The rationale in TCM is based on the theory of promoting blood circulation and resolving blood stasis, which are considered important for the healing of bruises and hematomas. However, scientific validation for these traditional uses is limited. There are some laboratory studies indicating that certain compounds found in Cynanchum species possess anti-inflammatory or analgesic activity, but there is a lack of robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies directly examining their efficacy for bruises or the prevention of bruising. As such, while the use of Cynanchum for bruises is well-documented in traditional medicine, modern scientific evidence supporting this application remains minimal.
