Evidence supporting the use of: Lingzhi
For the body system: Bronchials
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lingzhi (Ganoderma lucidum), also known as reishi, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) primarily for its immune-modulating, anti-inflammatory, and general health-promoting properties. Within TCM, lingzhi is traditionally used to "nourish the lungs" and "calm wheezing," which relates to support of the bronchial and respiratory system. Historical texts and herbal compendiums describe its use for symptoms such as cough, asthma, and shortness of breath. The underlying rationale is based on TCM theories of balancing "Qi" and alleviating "phlegm," rather than on a modern biomedical understanding.
Modern scientific studies provide limited evidence directly supporting lingzhi’s effects on the bronchial system. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, which could theoretically benefit respiratory health, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. The bulk of the justification for using lingzhi to support the bronchial system remains rooted in traditional use rather than rigorous scientific validation. Overall, the evidence rating is modest, reflecting a strong historical precedent with only preliminary scientific support.
