Evidence supporting the use of: Glycyrrhizin
For the body system: Bronchials
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Glycyrrhizin, a major active compound found in licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), has been traditionally used in herbal medicine systems, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, to support respiratory health and soothe the bronchial system. Historical uses include its application as an expectorant, demulcent, and anti-inflammatory agent in remedies for coughs, bronchitis, and sore throat. The demulcent properties of glycyrrhizin may help soothe irritated mucous membranes in the respiratory tract, providing symptomatic relief.
There is some preclinical scientific evidence suggesting that glycyrrhizin exhibits anti-inflammatory and antiviral activities, which could theoretically benefit bronchial health. For example, in vitro and animal studies have shown that glycyrrhizin can inhibit the replication of certain respiratory viruses and reduce inflammation in airway tissues. However, robust clinical trials in humans specifically evaluating its effectiveness for bronchial conditions are limited. The majority of human evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional use rather than modern clinical research.
Therefore, the use of glycyrrhizin to support the bronchial system is justified mainly by traditional use, with some emerging but not yet conclusive scientific support. Caution is advised due to potential side effects, such as hypertension and hypokalemia, especially with excessive or prolonged use.
