Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Adenophora, commonly known as "ladybell" or "sha shen" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has been used for centuries to support the respiratory system, particularly the lungs and bronchial passages. In TCM, Adenophora root (Adenophora stricta or Adenophora triphylla) is classified as a moistening herb, traditionally used to "nourish lung yin," alleviate dry cough, and soothe sore throat. Herbal texts and pharmacopoeias describe its use in treating conditions such as dry coughs, hoarseness, and bronchitis, often as part of multi-herb formulas. Despite its long history of use, scientific research on Adenophora's effectiveness for respiratory health is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies indicate anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant effects, which could theoretically benefit the bronchial system; however, these studies are preliminary and do not provide robust clinical evidence. Human clinical trials are lacking, and systematic reviews note the paucity of high-quality research. Therefore, while Adenophora’s use for bronchial support is well-grounded in tradition and historical herbal practice, current scientific validation is insufficient. Most support for its use remains rooted in traditional medicine rather than modern pharmacology.
