Evidence supporting the use of: Rubia yunnanensis
For the health condition: Blood Poisoning
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Rubia yunnanensis, a plant native to Yunnan province in China, has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for various blood-related disorders. In TCM, the concept of "blood poisoning" (often corresponding to syndromes involving blood stasis, inflammation, or infectious processes) is not the same as the Western medical definition of sepsis or septicemia. Historical records and pharmacopeias describe the use of Rubia yunnanensis (often related to the broader "Rubia" genus, particularly Rubia cordifolia) for promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, and alleviating toxic heat, which in TCM theory is sometimes related to conditions interpreted as "blood poisoning." However, there is limited direct clinical or pharmacological evidence linking Rubia yunnanensis specifically to the treatment of blood poisoning as defined in modern medicine. Some laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticoagulant properties in related Rubia species, but these findings are preliminary and not specific to blood poisoning. Overall, its use for this condition is supported mainly by traditional usage rather than modern scientific validation, and the evidence level is low.
