Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Rhemannia, particularly Rehmannia glutinosa, is an herb commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Its use for "blood poisoning"—a term that may refer to septicemia or systemic infection—is based primarily on traditional practice rather than robust scientific evidence. In TCM, Rhemannia is thought to "cool the blood" and nourish the yin, and is sometimes included in formulas for conditions believed to involve heat or toxicity in the blood. However, there is no direct scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for modern medical conditions such as sepsis or bacteremia. The traditional use is based on symptom patterns described in ancient medical texts rather than empirical studies or clinical trials.

Contemporary research has explored Rhemannia's anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects in vitro and animal studies, but these investigations have not specifically addressed its use in blood poisoning or systemic infections in humans. Therefore, its application for "blood poisoning" is justified mainly by tradition, and the supporting evidence is very limited.
