Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Wax Gourd (Benincasa hispida), also known as ash gourd or winter melon, has a longstanding history of use in traditional systems of medicine, especially in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In these traditions, it is considered cooling and diuretic, and is sometimes recommended for urinary tract conditions, including hematuria (blood in urine). Ayurvedic texts describe preparations of wax gourd pulp or juice as helpful for “mutrakricha” (urinary disorders) and to soothe irritation and inflammation in the urinary tract, which could manifest as blood in the urine. TCM also uses winter melon to clear heat and promote urination.

However, the scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited. While wax gourd does have mild diuretic properties, few contemporary studies have specifically evaluated its effects on hematuria. Some animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and nephroprotective effects, but there is no direct clinical trial data confirming efficacy for blood in urine in humans. The evidence rating is therefore moderate for traditional support, but weak for rigorous scientific validation.

In summary, wax gourd’s use for blood in urine is primarily grounded in traditional medicine practices rather than scientific validation.
