Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Hemp (Cannabis sativa), particularly its seeds and oil, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for various conditions, including as an external application for bleeding and wound healing. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), hemp seeds (huo ma ren) have been used for their moisturizing and mild laxative properties, but there are also accounts of hemp preparations being applied topically to help control bleeding and promote tissue repair. Ethnobotanical records show that different cultures utilized poultices or compresses made from hemp leaves or oil for minor wounds, cuts, and abrasions to aid hemostasis and healing.

However, robust scientific evidence directly supporting the effectiveness of hemp for external bleeding is limited. Most of the traditional use is based on anecdotal reports or case studies, and there is a lack of clinical trials or pharmacological studies specifically investigating hemp’s hemostatic properties. Some modern research suggests that certain cannabinoids possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities, which could indirectly support wound healing, but these findings do not directly confirm efficacy for stopping external bleeding. Therefore, while hemp’s use for this purpose is justified by historical tradition, scientific validation remains weak and primarily anecdotal.
