Evidence supporting the use of: Poria mushroom
For the health condition: Bladder Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Poria mushroom (Poria cocos, also known as Fu Ling in Traditional Chinese Medicine) is traditionally used to support urinary health, including bladder infections. In Chinese herbal practice, Poria is considered a "draining" and "dampness-resolving" agent, often included in formulas to promote urination and reduce edema. Classical texts and modern Chinese herbal compendia cite its use for symptoms such as urinary difficulty, cloudy urine, and urinary tract infections, though typically in combination with other herbs. The rationale in traditional use is based on the belief that Poria helps expel "dampness" from the lower burner (which includes the bladder) and thus can help clear infection-related symptoms. However, scientific validation specific to bladder infections is limited. Some in vitro studies suggest Poria may have mild anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory effects, but these have not been directly linked to efficacy in urinary tract infections. There is little to no robust clinical evidence (randomized controlled trials or cohort studies) supporting its isolated use for bladder infections in humans. Most contemporary uses for bladder conditions are extrapolated from traditional practice rather than modern pharmacological research. Therefore, while Poria is widely used for this indication in traditional medicine, scientific evidence remains preliminary and indirect.
