Sarsaparilla (Smilax spp.) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, including for urinary and bladder health. In systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and folk medicine in Central and South America, sarsaparilla root has been used as a general tonic and to "cleanse" the body, including purported benefits for the urinary tract. Some herbal traditions claim its diuretic properties help promote urination and support bladder function. However, there is little robust clinical research specifically validating these uses. Most scientific studies on sarsaparilla have focused on its potential anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant effects, but not directly on the bladder or urinary tract. While sarsaparilla contains saponins and other phytochemicals that may have mild diuretic actions, there is insufficient modern evidence to strongly support its effectiveness for bladder health. Therefore, its use for the bladder body system is primarily justified by traditional and historical use rather than current scientific validation.
