Madder refers to plants in the Rubia genus, most notably Rubia cordifolia, commonly known as Indian Madder or Manjistha. Traditionally, Madder has been used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine for a variety of purposes, including supporting bladder and urinary tract health. Historical texts describe its use as a diuretic and as an herb that helps to "cool" and "cleanse" the urinary system. It has been employed to support the normal function of the bladder and to assist in the management of urinary discomfort or mild urinary tract symptoms.

However, scientific evidence supporting Madder's efficacy specifically for bladder health is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that certain compounds in Madder may possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which could be relevant to urinary tract health. There is also limited evidence that Madder can help prevent the formation of urinary calculi (stones) in animal models, but robust human studies are lacking. The main justification for its use in supporting bladder health is therefore grounded in traditional systems rather than modern clinical research. As such, the overall evidence supporting Madder for bladder health is modest and primarily traditional in nature.
