Propolis, a resinous substance produced by bees, has been traditionally used in folk medicine for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. Historical records and ethnomedicinal sources describe the use of propolis topically to soothe and support the healing of minor wounds, including bites and stings. The rationale is primarily based on its ability to reduce inflammation, limit microbial infection, and potentially promote tissue repair. However, robust scientific studies specifically focusing on the efficacy of propolis for treating bites and stings are limited. Some laboratory and animal studies demonstrate that propolis extracts can exhibit anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, and there are small clinical trials suggesting benefits for wound healing in general. Despite these findings, direct evidence for its effectiveness specifically for insect bites, stings, or venomous wounds in humans is sparse. Thus, while propolis use for bites and stings has traditional backing and some plausible biological mechanisms, it is not yet strongly validated by high-quality clinical research for this specific indication.
