Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), have been studied for their role in pregnancy and fetal development. There is scientific interest in their potential to reduce the risk of some birth defects, especially those related to neural development. Omega-3s are critical components of cell membranes in the brain and retina, and maternal intake is linked to improved neurodevelopmental outcomes in offspring. Some observational studies suggest that higher omega-3 intake during pregnancy may lower the risk of preterm birth, low birth weight, or certain neural defects. However, the evidence specifically supporting omega-3s for the prevention of structural birth defects (such as neural tube defects, heart defects, or limb malformations) is limited and not conclusive. Most established guidelines recommend folic acid supplementation as the primary intervention to prevent neural tube defects, not omega-3s. While omega-3 supplementation is generally considered safe and may provide other maternal and fetal health benefits, its direct role in preventing birth defects is not strongly supported by clinical trials or meta-analyses. Therefore, omega-3 fatty acids may be recommended for overall pregnancy health, but they are not a primary or proven method for the prevention of birth defects.
