Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have been investigated for their potential role in supporting or treating Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The scientific rationale is based on the role of omega-3s in brain development, neurotransmission, and anti-inflammatory processes. Several observational studies have found that children with ADHD often have lower blood levels of omega-3s compared to their peers. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses have produced mixed results. Some studies report modest improvements in ADHD symptoms, especially inattention and hyperactivity, with omega-3 supplementation, while others show no significant benefit over placebo. Meta-analyses (e.g., Bloch & Qawasmi, 2011; Chang et al., 2018) suggest a small but statistically significant effect, particularly with higher EPA content, but the magnitude of benefit is generally considered to be modest and less than that of standard pharmacological treatments. Current clinical guidelines do not recommend omega-3s as a first-line therapy for ADD/ADHD, but some experts suggest they may be considered as adjunctive treatment, particularly for individuals with documented deficiencies or those who cannot tolerate stimulant medications. Overall, while there is some scientific support for the use of omega-3s in ADD/ADHD, the evidence is not robust, and more high-quality research is needed to clarify their clinical utility.
