Somatropin, a synthetic form of human growth hormone (hGH), is sometimes used by athletes and bodybuilders as an athletic and exercise aid—primarily with the aim of increasing muscle mass, reducing body fat, and enhancing recovery. There is scientific evidence that somatropin can promote growth in children with growth hormone deficiency and can alter body composition in adults, leading to increased lean body mass and decreased fat mass. Clinical studies in healthy adults have shown modest improvements in muscle mass and reductions in adipose tissue with exogenous hGH administration. However, these studies generally indicate that gains in muscle size do not necessarily translate to improved muscle strength or athletic performance. Furthermore, the use of somatropin for performance enhancement is not approved by regulatory agencies, and its use for this purpose is considered doping by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
While some athletes and fitness enthusiasts continue to use somatropin illicitly, the scientific support for its efficacy as an exercise aid is limited and does not justify the associated health risks, which include edema, joint pain, insulin resistance, and increased risk of diabetes. Most of the perceived benefits are anecdotal rather than well-validated in large-scale clinical trials. In summary, there is some scientific basis for somatropin’s effect on body composition, but strong evidence supporting its use as an athletic or exercise aid, especially regarding improved performance, is lacking.
