Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) has been traditionally used by Native American populations and later by European settlers for its purported ability to improve stamina, energy, and overall vitality, which relates indirectly to athletic and exercise performance. While Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng) is more renowned and researched for its potential ergogenic (performance-enhancing) effects, American ginseng shares some similar uses in traditional medicine, particularly as a general tonic. The root was commonly used to help with fatigue and to bolster physical strength, which may explain its inclusion in modern exercise supplements.

From a scientific standpoint, however, the evidence supporting the use of American ginseng specifically as an athletic or exercise aid is limited. Most contemporary studies have focused on Asian ginseng, and those that have investigated American ginseng often examine its effects on cognitive function, immune support, or glycemic control rather than direct improvements in exercise performance. A few small studies suggest potential benefits in reducing fatigue, but these findings are neither robust nor consistent. As such, the use of American ginseng for athletic performance is grounded more in tradition than in substantial scientific evidence.
