Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin D
For the health condition: Arteriosclerosis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vitamin D has been investigated for its potential role in cardiovascular health, including conditions such as arteriosclerosis (the thickening and hardening of the arterial walls). Recent scientific studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, including arteriosclerosis, likely due to its involvement in calcium metabolism, regulation of the renin-angiotensin system, and modulation of inflammation. Observational studies have found correlations between low serum vitamin D levels and increased arterial stiffness, a marker of arteriosclerosis. Furthermore, vitamin D receptors are present in vascular smooth muscle, endothelium, and cardiomyocytes, suggesting a direct biological role. However, intervention studies supplementing vitamin D to reduce arteriosclerosis progression have yielded mixed results. Some randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses have not shown significant benefits of vitamin D supplementation in improving arterial stiffness or reducing cardiovascular events in the general population. The evidence is stronger in populations with established vitamin D deficiency, where supplementation may help correct metabolic disturbances that contribute to vascular calcification. In summary, while there is a plausible biological rationale and observational evidence linking vitamin D status to arteriosclerosis, current interventional evidence is limited and inconsistent. Therefore, vitamin D is not universally recommended as a treatment for arteriosclerosis, but may play a supportive role in individuals with deficiency.
