Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin E (alpha-tocopheryl acetate) has been investigated for its potential to support arterial and overall cardiovascular health due to its antioxidant properties. As an antioxidant, vitamin E helps to neutralize free radicals, which are implicated in oxidative stress and the development of atherosclerosis—a condition that affects the arteries. Early observational studies suggested that higher vitamin E intake might be associated with reduced risk of coronary artery disease. This led to widespread use of vitamin E supplements for cardiovascular support.

However, large randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses have not consistently supported these early findings. For instance, the HOPE and Women's Health Study trials found that vitamin E supplementation did not significantly reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction and stroke. Some studies have even raised concerns about potential harm at high doses.

Despite disappointing results from intervention trials, the scientific rationale for considering vitamin E as supportive for the arteries remains based on its role in reducing oxidative modification of LDL cholesterol, a key step in atherogenesis. Currently, clinical guidelines do not recommend vitamin E supplementation for arterial or cardiovascular protection in the general population. In summary, while there is scientific investigation and theoretical justification, the evidence from clinical trials is weak, resulting in a low rating for its effectiveness in supporting the arteries.
