Palmitoleic acid is a monounsaturated omega-7 fatty acid found in various animal and plant sources, such as macadamia nuts and sea buckthorn oil. Some scientific research suggests that palmitoleic acid may have beneficial effects on cardiovascular health, which includes the arterial system. Animal and in vitro studies have shown that palmitoleic acid can reduce inflammation, improve lipid profiles, and enhance insulin sensitivity. These actions could theoretically benefit arterial health by reducing risk factors for atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases.
A few small human studies have observed that supplementation with palmitoleic acid may reduce levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation linked to arterial disease, and improve cholesterol levels. However, the evidence is preliminary, with most studies being small, short-term, or not specifically targeting arterial outcomes. There is still debate over whether the benefits seen are due directly to palmitoleic acid or to other components in the foods that contain it. There are no major clinical trials demonstrating a reduction in arterial disease events with palmitoleic acid supplementation. Thus, while there is some scientific rationale and early evidence for its use in supporting arterial health, robust clinical evidence is lacking at this time.
