Evidence supporting the use of: Hawthorn
For the body system: Arteries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine for supporting cardiovascular health, including arterial function. In recent decades, its efficacy and mechanisms have been investigated in scientific studies. Hawthorn extracts, particularly those standardized to flavonoids and oligomeric procyanidins, have been shown in animal and human research to exert vasodilatory, antioxidant, and mild hypotensive effects. These actions are thought to benefit the arteries by improving endothelial function, reducing oxidative stress, and promoting better blood flow.
Clinical trials, primarily in the context of mild heart failure and hypertension, have observed improvements in symptoms, cardiac output, and exercise tolerance, though evidence for direct benefits on arterial health (such as atherosclerosis prevention or arterial stiffness reduction) is less robust. Some studies suggest hawthorn may modestly lower blood pressure and improve lipid profiles, both relevant to arterial health. However, most human trials are small, short-term, or use varying preparations, limiting the strength of conclusions.
Overall, while hawthorn’s traditional use for heart and vascular health is supported by a moderate amount of scientific evidence—particularly for mild cardiovascular conditions—more rigorous research is needed to fully validate its role in supporting arterial health specifically.
