Ginsenosides are the primary active components of ginseng (Panax species), a traditional herbal remedy used for centuries in East Asia. Modern research has investigated the potential cardiovascular benefits of ginsenosides, including their effects on the arterial system. Several in vitro and animal studies indicate that ginsenosides may exert vasodilatory effects, improve endothelial function, and reduce oxidative stress in arteries. For example, some ginsenosides (such as Rg1 and Rb1) have been shown to stimulate nitric oxide production in endothelial cells, which can lead to relaxation of arterial smooth muscle and improved arterial compliance. Additionally, there is evidence that ginsenosides may inhibit platelet aggregation and reduce inflammation, both of which are relevant to arterial health.
However, while these mechanisms are promising, robust clinical evidence in humans remains limited. A few small clinical trials have suggested that ginseng supplementation can modestly improve arterial stiffness and blood pressure, but results are mixed and often confounded by study design limitations. Overall, the current body of scientific evidence supports a possible benefit of ginsenosides for arterial health, but larger and better-controlled human studies are needed to establish efficacy and optimal dosing. Thus, the use of ginsenosides for supporting arterial health is grounded in both mechanistic and some preliminary clinical data, justifying a moderate evidence rating.
