Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Citrulline nitrate is primarily justified for arterial and cardiovascular support based on scientific evidence. Citrulline is an amino acid that serves as a precursor to arginine, which is then converted to nitric oxide (NO), a molecule known to promote vasodilation and improve blood flow. This mechanism has been documented in several clinical studies assessing L-citrulline supplementation and its effects on vascular function. Nitrate, similarly, is known to increase NO production through the nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway. Citrulline nitrate thus represents a combination intended to synergistically boost nitric oxide availability and support endothelial function.

Research on citrulline nitrate specifically is limited compared to studies on citrulline or nitrate alone, but both components individually have demonstrated modest but consistent benefits in improving arterial stiffness, endothelial function, and exercise performance in both healthy and clinical populations. Some pilot studies and emerging trials suggest that citrulline nitrate supplementation can help enhance vasodilation and blood flow, which are directly related to arterial health.

Although more high-quality, long-term studies are needed to fully establish citrulline nitrate's efficacy and safety, the current scientific rationale is reasonably strong, with preliminary human and animal studies supporting its use for arterial support. Thus, the evidence is scientific, with a moderate strength rating of 3 out of 5.
