Algae (unspecified) have been studied for their potential cardiovascular benefits, including support for arterial health. Certain types of algae, particularly marine varieties like spirulina and chlorella, are rich in bioactive compounds such as omega-3 fatty acids (notably EPA and DHA in microalgae), antioxidants, and polysaccharides. Several small clinical studies and animal research have shown that some algae can help lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol levels, and improve endothelial function—all factors that support arterial health. For example, a few randomized controlled trials have found that spirulina supplementation can result in modest reductions in blood pressure and LDL cholesterol in humans. The mechanisms proposed include anti-inflammatory effects and improved lipid profiles.
However, most of the available evidence comes from studies on specific types of algae, not an unspecified or generalized group.
