Rating (out of 5): 1
Embelia ribes, commonly known as Vidanga, is a medicinal plant that has been widely used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Its primary traditional indications include treatment of intestinal worms (anthelmintic), digestive complaints, and as a general carminative. In classical Ayurvedic texts, Vidanga is sometimes mentioned for its role in regulating digestion and enhancing appetite, particularly in cases of loss of appetite (anorexia). However, use for excessive appetite (i.e., hyperphagia or abnormally increased appetite) is not a recognized or predominant traditional indication. Instead, traditional formulations often employ Embelia ribes to stimulate appetite in those lacking it, rather than suppressing or managing excessive appetite.
There is little to no scientific evidence supporting the use of Embelia ribes for the treatment of excessive appetite. The few available pharmacological studies on Embelia ribes focus mainly on its anthelmintic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. No clinical trials or preclinical studies were found that specifically evaluate its effects on excessive appetite or appetite regulation in general. Therefore, while there is a modest traditional basis for its use related to digestive health and loss of appetite, its use for excessive appetite is not supported by either robust traditional mention or scientific validation.
