Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Kuding tea (commonly derived from Ilex kudingcha or Ligustrum robustum) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Traditionally, Kuding tea is thought to "clear heat," "disperse wind," and "resolve toxins," and it is sometimes used to address symptoms such as poor appetite, indigestion, or feelings of fullness which may be interpreted in TCM as related to "deficient appetite." However, the use of Kuding tea specifically for enhancing or correcting deficient appetite is not one of its primary historical indications. Most documented traditional uses focus on its cooling, detoxifying, and anti-inflammatory properties, with some references to digestive support.

There is very limited scientific research directly evaluating Kuding tea's effects on appetite, especially in cases of appetite deficiency. A few animal studies have suggested that compounds in Kuding tea may have gastrointestinal effects, but these have not been clearly linked to appetite stimulation or clinical management of appetite loss. Overall, while there is some traditional precedent for its use in digestive complaints, the evidence supporting its use for treating or supporting deficient appetite is weak, with little direct clinical or pharmacological validation.
