Bacteria, particularly the diverse microbiota that inhabit the human gut, have been studied for their relationship to the appendix and its functions. Recent research suggests the appendix may serve as a reservoir for beneficial gut bacteria, helping to replenish the colon’s microbiome after infections or disturbances. Historically, the appendix was considered a vestigial organ, but modern scientific investigations have illuminated its potential role in immune function and maintaining gut flora.

Studies have shown that the appendix contains a high concentration of lymphoid tissue and is involved in the maturation of B lymphocytes and production of immunoglobulin A (IgA), both of which are important for gut immunity. The presence of commensal bacteria in the appendix is thought to aid in these immune processes and potentially protect against pathogenic invaders.

While direct supplementation with unspecified “bacteria” to support appendix health is not a standard or widely recommended practice, the general concept of maintaining a healthy gut microbiota—through probiotics or diet—may indirectly support the appendix’s function. However, there is limited direct clinical evidence that specific bacterial supplementation prevents or treats appendix-related diseases, such as appendicitis. Thus, while the connection between bacteria and appendix function is scientifically recognized, the strength of evidence for using bacterial supplements specifically for appendix support is moderate and not definitive.
