Rosavins are a group of compounds found primarily in Rhodiola rosea, a traditional adaptogenic herb. Their use for anxiety disorders is supported by some scientific studies, but overall, the evidence is limited and not robust. Several small clinical trials and preclinical (animal and in vitro) studies suggest that Rhodiola rosea extracts, which contain rosavins, may reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety. Proposed mechanisms include modulation of neurotransmitter activity (such as serotonin and dopamine), reduction of stress-induced cortisol release, and enhancement of cellular energy metabolism.

However, most studies to date have used standardized Rhodiola extracts containing rosavins and salidroside, rather than isolated rosavins alone. The sample sizes in human trials are generally small, and many studies lack rigorous controls or long-term follow-up. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews note that while there is preliminary evidence for anxiolytic effects, the quality of evidence is low to moderate and more high-quality, large-scale randomized controlled trials are needed. Guidelines from major psychiatric organizations do not currently recommend rosavins or Rhodiola rosea as a first-line treatment for anxiety disorders.

In summary, use of rosavins (as part of Rhodiola rosea extracts) for anxiety is supported by some scientific evidence, but this evidence is not strong. It may be considered as an adjunctive or alternative option, particularly for mild symptoms, but should not replace established therapies.
