Evidence supporting the use of: Orange essential oil
For the health condition: Anxiety Disorders
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Orange essential oil, particularly sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), has been traditionally used for its calming and uplifting properties. In recent years, several scientific studies have explored its potential anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects, particularly through aromatherapy. Small randomized controlled trials and experimental studies have shown that inhalation of orange essential oil can reduce anxiety levels in various settings, such as dental clinics or before minor medical procedures. For example, a 2012 study published in Physiology & Behavior found that participants exposed to orange oil aroma reported lower anxiety and a more positive mood compared to controls. Another study in 2013 (Advanced Biomedical Research) observed reduced anxiety among children undergoing dental procedures after exposure to orange essential oil vapor.
Despite these promising findings, the evidence base remains limited by small sample sizes, short study durations, and a lack of large-scale, high-quality trials. Most studies assess acute effects in specific, often stressful, contexts, rather than the management of chronic anxiety disorders. There is also variability in methods of oil administration and concentrations used. While the existing research suggests some benefit for situational anxiety, more rigorous studies are needed to establish efficacy for broader anxiety disorders. Thus, the evidence supporting the use of orange essential oil for anxiety is preliminary but not absent, meriting a modest evidence rating.
