Evidence supporting the use of: Vetiver
For the health condition: Anxiety
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in South and Southeast Asia. It is commonly used in Ayurveda and traditional folk practices to promote calmness, emotional balance, and to alleviate stress and anxiety. The roots of Vetiver are distilled to produce an essential oil that is often used in aromatherapy for its reputed grounding and relaxing effects.
However, scientific research on Vetiver’s effects specifically on anxiety in humans is limited. A few animal studies have investigated its anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) properties. For example, a 2015 study published in the journal Natural Product Research found that Vetiver essential oil exhibited anxiety-reducing effects in rats. Another small study suggested potential central nervous system effects, but robust, large-scale human clinical trials are lacking.
Overall, the use of Vetiver for anxiety is primarily supported by traditional and anecdotal evidence, with only preliminary scientific support from animal models. As such, while it remains a popular remedy in aromatherapy and traditional medicine, its efficacy for treating anxiety in humans has not been conclusively demonstrated by modern clinical research.
