Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) is an adaptogenic herb traditionally used in Russian and Scandinavian folk medicine to enhance physical and mental endurance, reduce fatigue, and support resilience to stress. There is some historical use of rhodiola for conditions involving poor appetite and weight loss, which may be why it is sometimes referenced for anorexia (in the sense of loss of appetite, not strictly the psychiatric disorder anorexia nervosa). The justification for its use in anorexia is primarily rooted in tradition rather than robust scientific validation. Traditional herbal texts have noted its use for improving mood and energy, which could indirectly benefit those with anorexia nervosa by addressing fatigue and low mood. However, there is little direct evidence from controlled clinical trials that specifically assess rhodiola’s effectiveness for treating anorexia nervosa or appetite loss. Some preclinical and limited human studies suggest rhodiola can modulate neurotransmitters and stress hormones, potentially influencing mood and stress-related eating behaviors. Nonetheless, these findings are preliminary and do not provide strong support for its use in this context. In summary, while rhodiola is traditionally used for general vitality, its application in anorexia is not strongly supported by scientific research and any benefit is largely anecdotal or theoretical.
