Grapes, particularly their skins and seeds, are rich in polyphenolic compounds such as resveratrol and flavonoids, which have been studied for their potential neuroprotective effects relevant to Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Scientific interest in grapes for AD support stems from these bioactive components' antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and their capacity to modulate amyloid-beta (Aβ) aggregation and tau pathology, both hallmarks of Alzheimer's pathology. Preclinical studies in cell cultures and animal models have shown that grape-derived polyphenols can reduce oxidative stress, inhibit Aβ fibril formation, and improve cognitive function. For example, resveratrol has been demonstrated to cross the blood-brain barrier and attenuate neurodegenerative processes in some animal studies.

However, clinical evidence in humans is limited and mixed. Some small-scale randomized controlled trials have suggested modest cognitive benefits from grape juice or resveratrol supplementation in older adults with mild cognitive impairment or early AD, but these studies often suffer from small sample sizes, short durations, and variable methodologies. Larger and more robust clinical trials are needed to conclusively determine efficacy. As a result, while there is scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence to support the use of grape-derived compounds for Alzheimer's Disease, the current level of evidence is best described as limited (rated 2 out of 5). Grapes and their extracts should not be considered a primary or standalone treatment for AD, but may be used as part of a healthy diet that could support brain health.
