Docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), an omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid, has attracted growing scientific interest for its potential neuroprotective properties, including possible roles in supporting or treating Alzheimer’s disease (AD). While the majority of research in this area has historically focused on other omega-3 fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), recent studies have begun to elucidate the unique actions of DPA. Animal and in vitro studies show that DPA may help reduce neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, both of which are implicated in AD pathogenesis. DPA has also been shown to modulate synaptic plasticity and may assist in maintaining neuronal membrane integrity. Some preclinical evidence suggests that DPA can reduce amyloid-beta accumulation, a hallmark of AD.
However, evidence from human clinical trials is still limited. The bulk of available human data comes from observational studies of dietary omega-3 intake, where DPA is typically grouped with DHA and EPA, making it difficult to attribute specific effects to DPA alone. A few small studies have noted lower plasma DPA levels in individuals with cognitive decline, but causality and therapeutic efficacy remain unproven. Overall, while there is a scientific rationale and preliminary evidence for DPA’s beneficial effects in AD, direct clinical validation is lacking, and its use for this condition should be considered experimental at present.
