Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Shen-chu, also known as "medicated leaven" or "shenqu," is a traditional Chinese fermentation product made from wheat flour, herbs, and yeast. It has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries, primarily to aid digestion and address food stagnation. Its use in treating or supporting alcohol-related conditions, such as alcoholism, is grounded in traditional practices rather than modern scientific validation. Historically, shen-chu was sometimes included in herbal formulas intended to help with the aftereffects of alcohol consumption (such as indigestion, nausea, or "food retention" after drinking), based on its reputed ability to promote digestion and metabolism. However, there is no high-quality clinical or pharmacological evidence demonstrating that shen-chu can treat alcoholism itself (as a substance use disorder) or reduce alcohol dependence or cravings. Its role was more about alleviating digestive discomfort after alcohol intake rather than addressing the addiction or dependency component of alcoholism. Modern scientific literature does not support the use of shen-chu for alcoholism, and there are no recognized clinical trials or systematic reviews validating its efficacy for this purpose. Therefore, the rationale for its use is rooted in tradition, with minimal supporting evidence, and it should not be considered a scientifically validated treatment for alcoholism.
