Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin A is an essential fat-soluble vitamin involved in numerous physiological processes, including vision, immune function, and cellular growth and differentiation. Its connection to aging, particularly aging prevention, is primarily based on its role in skin health and cellular repair. Topical retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) are well-studied for their ability to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation by promoting collagen synthesis and increasing cellular turnover in the skin. Several clinical studies have demonstrated that topical retinoids can improve signs of photoaging, making vitamin A a scientifically validated intervention in dermatological aging prevention.

However, evidence for oral vitamin A supplementation specifically for general aging prevention is limited. While vitamin A is essential for overall health and deficiency can accelerate signs of aging or cause skin problems, there is little direct evidence that supplementation beyond the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) provides anti-aging benefits in otherwise healthy individuals. Excessive intake of vitamin A can also cause toxicity and is not recommended. Thus, while vitamin A—primarily as topical retinoids—plays a recognized role in skin aging prevention, its broader role in systemic aging prevention is not strongly supported by high-quality evidence.
