Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pterostilbene is a natural compound structurally similar to resveratrol, found mainly in blueberries and Pterocarpus marsupium. Its use in aging prevention is supported by preclinical scientific research, though high-quality human data is limited. Animal and in vitro studies suggest that pterostilbene possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties, which are relevant to the biological processes implicated in aging. For example, it has been shown to activate sirtuin pathways (notably SIRT1), mimic caloric restriction effects, and reduce markers of oxidative stress and inflammation—mechanisms thought to contribute to increased lifespan and improved healthspan in laboratory models.

However, there are few well-designed human clinical trials assessing pterostilbene’s direct effects on aging or longevity. Some small-scale studies have examined its influence on metabolic and cognitive markers, but these are preliminary and do not establish clear anti-aging benefits in humans. Compared to resveratrol, pterostilbene offers better bioavailability, which has fueled interest in its potential as a nutraceutical for aging. Nonetheless, mainstream medical consensus has not endorsed its use for aging prevention due to the lack of robust clinical evidence. In summary, while basic research provides a scientific rationale for pterostilbene’s role in supporting healthy aging, the evidence remains limited, warranting a moderate rating of 2 out of 5.
