Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Polypodium leucotomos, a tropical fern native to Central and South America, has been studied primarily for its photoprotective properties, which are linked to skin aging prevention. Several small clinical trials and in vitro studies suggest that oral supplementation with Polypodium leucotomos extract (PLE) can reduce skin damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The mechanism is thought to involve antioxidant activity, reduction of UV-induced DNA damage, and suppression of inflammatory responses in the skin. For example, studies published in peer-reviewed journals (such as Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology) have shown that PLE can decrease markers of UV-induced photoaging, such as erythema and DNA photolesions. However, while the evidence supports a protective effect against acute and chronic UV damage—which is a major contributor to skin aging—the direct evidence for PLE preventing overall aging or reversing established signs of aging is limited. Most studies are small, short-term, and focus on photoprotection rather than broader anti-aging effects. There is some traditional use of the plant for inflammatory conditions, but its use for aging prevention is grounded in these recent scientific findings. Thus, while PLE appears to offer modest support for skin aging prevention due to its photoprotective and antioxidant effects, more robust, long-term studies are needed to fully establish its efficacy for anti-aging purposes.
