Ghee, or clarified butter, is highly valued in traditional Indian medicine, particularly Ayurveda, for its purported role in promoting longevity and preventing the signs of aging. Texts such as the Charaka Samhita describe ghee as a “Rasayana,” or rejuvenative substance, believed to nourish body tissues (dhatus), support cognitive function, and promote overall vitality. These claims are largely based on centuries-old practices and anecdotal observations rather than rigorous clinical evidence. Contemporary scientific research on ghee’s anti-aging effects is limited. Ghee is rich in fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) and antioxidants, which in theory could contribute to cellular health and reduce oxidative stress, a factor in aging. However, direct clinical studies demonstrating that ghee consumption slows aging or prevents age-related decline in humans are lacking. Thus, while ghee’s use for aging prevention is deeply rooted in tradition, its efficacy for this purpose remains to be substantiated by modern scientific research.
