Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum or Ocimum tenuiflorum, also known as Tulsi) is traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine as an adaptogen, a class of herbs believed to help the body resist stressors and support the adrenal glands. Scientific evidence supporting its effects on the adrenal system and stress response is emerging but still limited. Several preclinical studies show that Holy Basil may reduce physiological markers of stress and normalize cortisol levels in animal models. Some small human studies suggest it can improve stress symptoms, mood, and cognitive function, likely by modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in 2011 found that Holy Basil extract reduced symptoms of stress and anxiety in human subjects compared to placebo. However, these studies are often small, short-term, and sometimes lack rigorous methodology.

While there is a biological rationale for Holy Basil's adaptogenic effects—such as its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties—direct evidence for its ability to "support the adrenal glands" specifically is less robust. Overall, scientific validation is present but not yet conclusive, and more high-quality clinical trials are needed to firmly establish its efficacy for adrenal support.
