Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 2

Triterpenes are a large and diverse class of naturally occurring compounds found in many plants, including medicinal herbs traditionally used for adrenal support, such as licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) and some adaptogenic mushrooms. Historically, these plants have been used in various traditional medicine systems (such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda) to support what is now understood as adrenal function, stamina, and resilience to stress.

However, the reference to "triterpene (unspecified)" is quite broad, and there is no direct or standardized evidence for the use of generic, unspecified triterpenes specifically for supporting the adrenal cortex. Most of the traditional use is indirect, based on whole plant extracts rather than isolated triterpenes. In the case of licorice, for example, glycyrrhizin (a triterpenoid saponin) is believed to help modulate cortisol metabolism, and thus support adrenal function in times of stress. Similar traditional claims exist for certain triterpene-rich mushrooms, like reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), which are used to promote vitality and endurance.

Despite these traditions, there is little rigorous scientific validation for isolated, unspecified triterpenes directly supporting the adrenal cortex. Most evidence remains anecdotal or based on historical usage of triterpene-containing herbs rather than the triterpene compounds themselves.
