Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Salt, specifically sodium chloride, has been traditionally used to support the adrenal cortex, particularly in the context of adrenal insufficiency or so-called "adrenal fatigue." Historically, practitioners of naturopathy and some branches of alternative medicine have recommended increased salt intake for individuals experiencing symptoms such as fatigue, low blood pressure, and salt cravings, which are sometimes attributed to underactive adrenal glands. The rationale behind this stems from the adrenal cortex's role in producing aldosterone, a hormone that regulates sodium and water balance. In cases of true adrenal insufficiency (such as Addison’s disease), the body may lose excessive sodium, and salt supplementation is medically necessary as part of treatment.

However, outside of diagnosed adrenal insufficiency, the scientific evidence supporting salt as a means of "supporting" adrenal health is limited. Most people with normal adrenal function do not require extra salt, and excess salt intake may have adverse effects, such as increasing blood pressure. While there is a physiological basis for using salt in the management of adrenal insufficiency under medical supervision, the broader use of salt for general adrenal cortex support is primarily based on tradition rather than robust scientific validation.
