Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Panax Ginseng has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asia, for centuries as a general tonic and adaptogen, believed to enhance vitality, resilience to stress, and overall well-being. Its use for supporting the adrenal cortex specifically is rooted primarily in these traditional practices, which view ginseng as beneficial in conditions of fatigue and stress—states often associated with adrenal function. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Panax Ginseng is thought to replenish "Qi" (vital energy) and is frequently recommended for those with symptoms consistent with adrenal fatigue, though this diagnosis is not recognized in conventional medicine.

Scientific research on Panax Ginseng has demonstrated some adaptogenic and anti-fatigue effects, and studies suggest it may modulate stress responses via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. However, direct evidence specifically linking Panax Ginseng to improved adrenal cortex function in humans is limited. Most clinical trials focus on general fatigue, cognitive function, and immune modulation rather than direct adrenal effects. Thus, while there is some experimental support for stress resilience, the use of Panax Ginseng specifically for adrenal cortex support is not robustly validated by scientific research and remains primarily justified by traditional use.
