Evidence supporting the use of: Cortisol
For the body system: Adrenal Cortex
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 5
Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone produced naturally by the adrenal cortex and is vital in regulating a wide range of physiological processes, including metabolism, immune response, and stress adaptation. Its therapeutic use, in the form of synthetic analogs (such as hydrocortisone), is thoroughly validated in the management of adrenal insufficiency, most notably Addison’s disease—a condition in which the adrenal cortex fails to produce adequate amounts of cortisol. In such cases, replacement therapy with cortisol or its analogs is essential and life-saving. Clinical guidelines and numerous studies have established the necessity and efficacy of cortisol replacement in restoring normal physiological function and preventing adrenal crisis. Additionally, corticosteroids are used in a range of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions due to their potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties, further demonstrating their critical role in supporting adrenal cortex function when endogenous production is deficient. The use of cortisol in this context is based on robust scientific evidence and decades of clinical experience.
