Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Puerarin, an isoflavone derived from the root of the kudzu plant (Pueraria lobata), has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for various ailments, including the management of alcohol-related issues. Classical texts and folk remedies have recommended kudzu extracts to reduce alcohol cravings and intoxication effects. In more recent decades, scientific interest has grown regarding puerarin’s potential in supporting addiction treatment, especially alcohol dependence. Several small-scale clinical trials and animal studies suggest that puerarin may reduce alcohol intake and suppress alcohol-seeking behaviors, potentially through modulation of neurotransmitter systems (such as dopamine and GABAergic pathways) involved in addiction. However, while some preliminary human studies (notably by researchers at Harvard and in China) have shown reduced alcohol consumption after kudzu extract administration, the evidence base remains limited, with inconsistent study designs, small sample sizes, and variable dosages. As such, while there is a strong traditional foundation and some scientific support for puerarin’s use in addiction, especially alcohol addiction, the overall quality of evidence is moderate and not yet definitive. Larger, well-controlled clinical studies are necessary to confirm efficacy and safety for broader therapeutic use in addiction treatment.
